Kaspar Hauser has spent the first 16 years of his life locked up alone in a cellar. A man looked after him as if he were a prisoner in a dungeon. This man brought him food and water and he taught how to say one sentence, but only one. In 1828 the boy appeared, on his own, in the town square of Nüremberg. He became a celebrity figure: a greast enigma, and people came from all over Europe to watch this unique creature and observe the process of turning the wild child into a "civilised" human being. Years later, when Kaspar had learned how to read and write, he was murdered. No one knows exactly why or by whom. Why Kaspar Hauser? Why this new version?We were attracted to the story by its dramatic power, its metaphorical meaning and the essential question that it raises: Can we really be happy in a society that is so terribly complex as ours?Kaspar was not happy in Nüremberg and always expressed a desire to return to the cellar. It was in the cellar where he was happy. He suffered his education as if he were suffering a long drawn out process of torture.From the experience suffered by Kaspar Hauser many important questions arise concerning the health of our civilisationits hypocricy and lack of common sense.Kaspar Hauser is a great tragic figure, and the story is universal and almost mythological. He is a perfect character for the style developed by ÑU TEATRO based on the physical theatre techniques of Meyerhold, Grotowski, and Michael Chekhov. Nevertheless, after examining Handke's play we found it too focused on the linguistic aspect of the dilema. We wanted to explore a wider field and so decided to write our own version.
