For better or worse, the decade ahead will be one of radical change on all levels. We are arriving at the breaking point of world-stress, tugged there by an ever-expanding, all-consuming society, and the religion of the superfluous. We are entering the era of Real Necessity. Things HAVE TO change if we are to survive in a healthy world. But not only “things” but outlooks, approaches, our very way of seeing life.For this reason ÑU TEATRO is also changing.The years unfolding will be a time of revaluation, and ÑU TEATRO will begin a process of revaluation. Revaluation implies creation. Creation cannot flourish if it is stressed by commercial priorities and the new ÑU TEATRO must be established with purely artistic pretensions in order to achieve the artistic integrity that it aspires to. As such we have decided that our next project will be pre-empted by a process of creative investigation, an aesthetical laboratory, which will serve to forge a creative discipline of real necessity for the group. The initial AIM of the laboratory will be two pronged:FIRST: to revaluate our own theatrical languages, creating languages which will have universality but will also be characteristic and emblematic of Ñu.SECOND: to establish a creative and disciplined base which will provide a healthy and fertile soil from which the identity of ÑU can be manifested and from which the creative process can grow and bloom freely. In order to achieve these aims our initial proposal is to dip into the metaphysical systems from both Oriental and Western philosophies that describe the harmony of tensions and the interwoven fabric of the creatively self-sufficient universe. Such “systems” could include the Yin and Yang (for its beautiful simplicity), the Golden Chain of the Renaissance (for its ideas of interconnectivity), or the Tree of Life of the Hebraic Kabala (for its poetic psychology of being). But the laboratory will not be a class in metaphysics, far from it, the purpose of the laboratory will always be to draw theatrical consequences from these disciplines. Our investigation will be centred on the imaginative stimulus that such ideas provoke and their significance today, in our real contemporary panorama. We will centre it on the relation of abstract idea to corporeal expression; on the meaningful transformation of the meta--physical into the real; on the poetical significance and its influence on text and music. We are now writing in English and the laboratories will take place in English. The main reason for this is to crystallise a more universal, bilingual group, that can work in either English or Spanish. Also by working in a second language we believe it will enhance concentration and discipline and widen creativity. We are not looking for bilingual members only, but artists joining the group will need to be able to have enough English in order to follow and participate in the workshops. The world we live in is already NEW. The demands are NEW.The needs are NEW.Get ready for the revaluation.
