SynopsisIt's the year 1868, and Isabel II arrives in París, her place of exile. They have banished her from the country. But why? For being immoral? Or for being a woman? For being an incompetent woman? Would an incompetent man have been banished? Or perhaps it was for being a female ruler of a macho society. In Paris she wants to forget Spain and her old life, but her ghosts still haunt her. She wants to forget her lovers and her husband, forget politics and all the bickering and hate that she was always surrounded by. But foretting is impossible. And while her servants plan their own little revolution Isabel will have to suffer her worst nightmare: to share her home with her mother.
Theatre within theatre. The most controversial Queen of Spain falls, once again into one of her capricious contradictions by wanting to forget about the past whilst at the same time forcing her servants to act out the story of her life. This is a play about class struggle and hypocricy that speaks of true love and the search for happiness. And it is also offers a reflection on how much a people need to be governed and to what point they should learn to govern themselves.
